Information Creation as Process

Topic: Child abandonment in South Africa

Information creation as process refers to the understanding that the information is created and produced with the purpose to convey a message and is shared via various delivery methods.

The reason I chose my topic was to raise awareness on the issues related to child abandonment in South Africa. Earlier this year when my colleagues and I visited one of the libraries we came across a very disturbing situation, a newborn was dumped in a rubbish bin outside the library. As a mother, I asked myself, why would you carry a child for 9 months only to kill her/him after? one of the things that came to mind was that it was because of different desperate situations and people or rather mothers lack information on how they can deal with such situations better.

The information sources selected include information on how mothers can hand their children for adoption should they feel they cannot manage to raise them. Also included is a website for a Children's Home where mothers can get help. This information is aimed at raising awareness on this issue.

5 Formats of information sources

1. Magazine article covering  full stories sometimes based on the interviews conducted with the victims/people involved.
2. Online newspaper - provides current information as it happened. Also provided, are general statistics on the topic.
3. Printed book - covers full coverage of a well researched information with different opinions (if scholarly)qualified researchers.
4. Website - provides referral information for victims of crime. It is an open door to mothers facing the same situations. It provides guidance on the laws and actions mothers can take if they want to hand their children for adoption.
5. Thesis - written by qualified researcher on the field providing literature based on previous research works on the same or related topics.

Title: Child abandonment in SA

This article is rather a bit sad. It outlines how children need their mother's love. It also questions if South African mothers are really that loveless due to the high rates of abandoned children in the country. The pictures in this article will make you cry and make you want to love your child/children even more. I like how Vanessa wrote this article, simple language and still manages to convey the message.
This source will be converted into a PowerPoint presentation as I did not come across any information on the topic that was presented as PowerPoint. It will make an interesting presentation and draws attention to people on the field.

Title: S.A the child abandonment capital?
      Available at:
      https://randfonteinherald.co.za/248369/sa-the-child-abandonment-capital/

This article questions if South Africa is a capital country for abandonment children. Revealed in this article is that the number of anonymous abandoned children has increased and that has led to a decision by many organizations that there must be a campaign to raise awareness. This article can be very useful for student studying Social Work as it includes organizations and laws related to child abandonment in South Africa.

If further research is conducted on this article, it has a potential of being turned into scholarly article.
      •  Websites
      Available at:
      http://doorofhope.co.za/

The first thing you see on the website is a quote from Bishop Desmond Tutu, "Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness", and there is a picture of a happy child next to the quote. Door of Hope is an NGO whose mission is to save abandoned babies, give children a home, build character for those babies and creating a better world for them. This website can be useful for parents who want to adopt. The website also has a blog where they handle their donations and campaigns. Also included are the video where they interviewed the first child that was received by the home when they first opened their doors. I have attached the video....This organization can make an impressing presentation in teaching future social workers about child abandonment.

      • Printed book (UWC Library)
      Title: Abandoned children
Author: Catherine Panter-Brick and Malcolm T. Smith
      Publisher: Cambridge University Press
      Date: 2000
      Location: Level 11 main library
      Shelf no.: 362.73 ABA
The only reason I selected this book was because of what is on the content page. Each part of the book's chapter is written by a different author which might be a good thing as it provides views from different angles and experiences. Information on this book, compiled with information on the below thesis will make up an interesting blog.
