Topic: Child abandonment and measures to reduce child abandonment    in South Africa


Objectives:
  • To introduce undergraduate learners to the issues related to child abandonment in South Africa.
  • To test their own knowledge on the topic
  • To raise curiosity and motivation for them to be aware and draw interest on the issues surrounding the social services in the country.
Scenario:
Learners will have to conduct a short research on child abandonment in South Africa. They will be given the following topics to discuss:
  • Define child abandonment
  • Causes
  • Statistics
  • Adoption
  • Attached Laws
  • Effects of child abandonment in adulthood
  • Measures to reduce



Outcomes

Activities

Use various research methods, based on the need, circumstance and type of inquiry

Interview abandoned children, families who adopted, children’s home caregivers, social worker’s, psychologists, etc.  and read biographies written by or about adopted children to gain more understanding on their feelings.
Disposition:  Follow ethical and legal guidelines in gathering and using information (get ethical clearance with relevant departments)

Monitor gathered information and assess for gaps or weaknesses

Read research articles and books and determine what topics you still need to research about and include in your discussion.
Disposition: Maintain an open mind and a critical stance

Synthesize ideas gathered from multiple sources

Compile your essay, present your findings from the collected information, compare it with the information gathered from the literature, and give your views and/or recommendations of how the future looks like in terms of the issues affecting child abandonment.
Disposition: Learners will realize that there will be more research needed in future and they will Consider research as open-ended exploration and engagement with information
